1 Corinthians 13:4b

When talking about love as being kind, we remember God’s trait in Acts when “He has shown kindness by giving rain and seasonal crops.” Kind in this context is generous and considerate. Giving when we are not required is kindness.

Kindness comes in different forms. Giving a beggar something, giving emotional support to someone, showing understanding and sympathy. However, not everyone who gives are considered kind. So what sets apart kindness? A warm heart.

We are ready to act without grumbling, no grandstanding, just genuine generosity and fondness. There is purity in the heart and not setting up conditions prior to giving. When people say they love someone and yet display behaviors contrary to the definition, is it almost obvious to say that isn’t love?

In our society, it is not uncommon to give without the expectation of gain. But that is not kindness. It could be barter, swap, favors but far from kindness. The Lord even commands us to be kind to strangers lest they be angels. It is an act of selflessness without reciprocity.

“What’s in it for me?” should be our gauge in measuring kindness. If you can answer “nothing” and still feel warm in the heart, then your love is kind.
