A friend has had this framed tapestry in her home and asked me to help her research for any info on who it was or what it was. Picture attached, see below.
My Patient Husband reads “saints of the day” and I showed him your picture and told him it was most likely an Armenian tapestry.
He said that the pallium with the crosses indicates it’s a bishop or archbishop, which means it’s not one of the apostles. The way he’s holding his hand means he’s Orthodox. The halo means he’s a saint.
In pictures, both St. Gregory the Illuminator and St. Methodius are depicted holding a book and both are saints in the Armenian church. PH’s best guess is that it’s probably St. Gregory the Illuminator, who is the founder of the Armenian church.
Oh my, that could be it because she is Armenian and she is pretty advanced in age and couldn’t remember things anymore, and she’s been fixating on this- losing sleep and all. Thanks, i will tell her what you told me, thanks a bunch!
Yes it is St. Gregory the Illuminator Patron St of Armenian Church. Here is the site: http://stilluminators.org/ Maybe she can find prayers there. Her husband might be Armenian & someone that is against the culture (a conversion maybe) St Gregory was vehement about Catholicism/Christianity fought for his sons to sit at the head of Catholicism in Armenia. Her husband might be Catholic 🙂
The name in my opinion is not the massage .Its a picture of faith and blessed is the house and the person who have it.A massage of the good news ,the crosses are the promised eternal happiness.I would say he is St.Thomas who took his mission to India. My regards.jalal
well could be St. John of The Cross or St. Peter but really they are guesses.Probably a repro of some famous artwork or stained glass window. From the looks of doorway, likely Middle East which include Holy Land etc. Since there is a door in the bottom of the cloak – it could even be an artists depiction of Jesus. “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9)
I did note 3rd finger is a partial which is strange – maybe he was partial to that book, and with that book – he found that door, and with that door – he would be no more. Hey it could happen! *L*
you are sooo right. if you look, one hand is missing. he’s body was displaced and hands separated in 2 different places in the middle east. the depiction reflects that. good eye pd 🙂
I think God speaks through us cognition and the 5 senses are his expressions through us. There is no randomness in our world everything has a precise place & purpose.
She’s Armenian, so that’s a springboard. I have no clue. Could just be an ordinary depiction of a saint or something. But could be orthodox in nature, who knows:) thanks tho.

I thought so, but look closely at the fingers. I may be reading too much into it, but could that be a give away of some sort?
