The book of Ephesians was written while Paul was imprisoned about 60-62 AD. In his letter he said, be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:16)
Now I wonder what kind of evil ways Paul talked about. If he were alive today, he probably would have an addendum or a footnote to the book of Ephesians and say, “well, 2015 is evil-er”. Just look around you. If evil ways are not obvious just read the papers, go online or watch the news and one could easily say to Paul, “Dude, you ain’t seen the worse yet”.
It is scary how when I was growing up things considered evil then are considered the norm now. In Oakland alone, killing is just a matter of statistics. You wake up in the morning just to get an account of how many got killed the previous night. People kill for a measly dollar to support an addiction, kids murdering parents to pursue a romantic relationship. People burning down houses, even schools are being used to promote ideas considered radical, inappropriate or immoral to some extent.
We live in a society where everyone is an expert. Everyone is a lawyer, everyone is an advocate. Everyone is suing everyone. There is a wide disregard for authorities. Kids grow up with a twisted sense of entitlement. All rights, no responsibilities. We hail criminals as heroes. We reward bad behavior. Parents do not question and disciple their kids. Every kid is fantastic, amazing and good-until they are not.
What was illegal decades ago are legal now. Everything is changing but not for the good. People are desensitized. Everything is permissible and tolerated until we fall into the chaos of idiocy, then we react. We are a reactive not proactive nation. Our leaders don’t lead and are getting caught involved in illegal activities. A nation stripped of values and everything is fair game.
Paul’s letter continued on to say that we should therefore not be foolish, but for us to understand what the will of the Lord is. ( v.17) I truly believe that God’s will for us is a life of blessings.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”-Jeremiah 29:11
Paul’s statement was true to his day and is still true today. Days are gonna be worse than it is now but where we anchor our faith makes the difference. Be wise and pray, for the days are evil.
