Your Cheating Heart

What is wrong with this picture?

To most, the answer would be none. But to some, something is not right.

In most romantic movies when it comes to the matter of the heart, a friend or a relative would say “just follow your heart”, or “go where your heart leads you”. Then, teary eyed and a sappy love song background plays and fades, and cut! Makes for a feel good romantic movie, but not in real life.

It isn’t true that there is no path. There has been a path, we just don’t want to follow the path because it is hard to navigate sometimes.

And we can’t always follow our hearts because our hearts are unreliable. Deceitful. Wicked even. And most of the time, when we follow our hearts we mess up big time.

We have to be careful too when we turn to friends for advice and counsel. Like I said, well- meaning friends may not share your heart’s desire and they genuinely want to help, but they may not have the wisdom necessary at the time.

This is particularly true if you are a believer in Christ. We run to our friends and they say, ” if I were in your shoes…” be wary that although they are best friends they don’t really wear our shoes. They may say something which sounds good but is not appropriate for a believer.

And if you are the one giving counsel, be conscious and be careful of what comes out of your mouth, “for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34)

Who to turn to? What to follow?

First, we seek God and His will. We always have to remember to run to our Father first for He is our wonderful counsellor. We pray and we listen. No horoscope.

Second, search the Scripture. It is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Tim.3:16)

Third, we seek the help of a godly friend or someone you trust for prayer and accountability. God sends people our way to pray for us, confirm a message and to give us courage.

As we draw closer to God, He gives us a NEW heart and a NEW spirit (Ezekiel 36:26) and His voice becomes audible, weeding out the unnecessary noises and voices of the world.

Be still heart and listen to the Lord, for He is faithful and able to direct you to the right path.

You are so right! God speaks through us. We fail to listen; as Humans we want to believe it is our hearts.
