Life Is Short

How short? Check Psalm 39:5  I mean how short is that? A nanosecond of a second?

When my Sunday School teacher passed away three years ago, we were all shocked because he was really young at that time. He was I think, 3 years my senior.  Just recently another church friend passed away and he was only 42. If life begins at 40 then he was only a baby, right?

Pray without ceasing-Thessalonians 5:17

When someone dies at the age below 50, we say “too young”. When someone dies at the age over 60 , we say “that’s not too old”, but when someone dies at the age over 80, people say “well, that was a life well lived”. But was it really?

David continues on to say that  we are phantoms-we go to and fro and bustle about, but only in vain.  We heap up wealth, not knowing who will get it. (verse 6)

This is not to imply that we should not be working and saving up for the rainy days, not at all. But when heaping up earthly wealth becomes our priority, “the life well-lived” is not going to be an appropriate inscription on our epitaphs. When our lives are just a breath, we need to store up treasures in heaven.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be.

I can understand why a lot of people, including myself would want to live longer. There’s just too many things that we want to do and time is running out on us. The life we know now seems relatively comfortable, only because we are experiential beings.  If we can experience heaven now, all the more that we will want to stay and live longer.  But God knew what he was doing and He knew where our hearts would be, and in my last blog I mentioned that God offers combo deals on how to live our lives, not merely for ourselves but in fulfillment of what God created for us to do.

Our hope is in the Lord (v.7)

…and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ- 2 Peter 1:11

Do you want to live longer and forever? God designed it that way! The gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ. We were dead in sin, but alive in Christ.

If life is short and God had a gift of eternal life in Jesus, wouldn’t you accept that?

  1. I love how you present your questions and “ponders” in your posts! It does cause us to consider the quality of a life lived. As I like to say, no one goes “before their time.” God knows how many years we have, and if we make Godly use of them, we have a prize of heaven waiting for us, and a forever life as well!

  2. Very insightful. My son was killed in a motorcycle accident two years ago this month. He was only 27 years old but certainly accomplished more than most people his age. He now makes his home in Heaven. One never knows the day God has set for our homecoming.

    1. I am sorry for your loss, Elizabeth and yes age is not an indication of how well a life is lived. But guess what? One day soon, a great family reunion is gonna happen. Something to look forward to huh? Hugs!
